Toyota Surpasses 500,000 Hybrid Sales in Australia as Demand Soars
Toyota has marked a major milestone in Australia, delivering its 500,000th hybrid vehicle—a RAV4 SUV—during December 2024.
In 2024 alone, Toyota dealers supplied 118,081 hybrid-electric vehicles, a 63.8% increase from the previous year’s 72,084. This is the first time hybrid sales have surpassed six figures in a single calendar year, whether from a single brand or the entire industry.
Hybrid-electric models accounted for 48.9% of Toyota’s total sales in 2024, up from 33.5% in 2023. Including the bZ4X SUV and Mirai, Toyota’s electrified sales share reached 49.3%. If Toyota’s hybrids were a standalone brand, they would rank second in overall sales, just behind the company’s petrol and diesel vehicles.
The RAV4 cemented its position as Australia’s top-selling hybrid for the second consecutive year, with 55,902 deliveries—more than double the 25,666 sold in 2023. It also remains Australia’s best-selling hybrid of all time, with 167,776 sales in under six years, making up one-third of Toyota’s total 505,252 HEV sales since the Prius first arrived in 2001.
Sales records highlight the accelerating adoption of hybrid technology. It took Toyota 19 years to surpass 50,000 annual hybrid sales in 2020, but only four more years to double that rate to over 100,000 per year.
Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, attributed the strong demand to fuel-conscious consumers and improved supply. “The 2024 figures show that Australians see Toyota hybrids as practical, capable, and cost-effective vehicles that help reduce fuel use and carbon footprint today,” he said.
