On Sunday the 31st of June, around 30,000 people put on their gardening gloves and joined forces in making their green imprint on society.
Proudly supported by Toyota, Planet Ark’s ‘National Tree Day’ just celebrated 20 years in raising awareness for the importance of our environment. It has also become an opportunity to enhance local communities, around the country.
The day found councils, schools and community groups working together, to plant around 1.1 million trees and shrubs to help greenify their urban areas. The day itself brought thousands of people together, educating them on ways to prevent soil erosion, provide soil enrichment, improve water quality and providing our wildlife with food and shelter.
However, there is meaning here, that goes further than planting a tree in the ground. Planet Ark’s stated that their latest research proves ‘spending time in nature has medically and scientifically beneficial effects that enable people to grow healthier, happier, brighter, calmer and closer’. Therefore, becoming a fulfilling opportunity to do something good for the environment and benefit from positive health and wellbeing.
